Nature and Scope

Under direct supervision of the Dentist(s), Dental Hygienist cleans and polishes teeth using scaling instruments and a rotating polisher. Applies decay preventive agents such as fluorides and sealants, charts medical and dental histories and takes and develops dental x-ray films. Counsels patients regarding good nutrition and oral health, teaches patients appropriate oral hygiene techniques, and informs dentist of the condition of patient’s mouth.

Compensation

Compensation Philosophy:

  • We have 13 pay increments on our clinical pay scales to compensate staff for 30 years of relevant experience. 

Compensation Range:

  • $60.86 - $ 86.77 / hour

Qualifications

Education:

  • Current CPR card.
  • Graduated from a school of dental hygiene accredited by the commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Licensed in California, under the provisions of the Dental Practice Act, administered by the State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Passed the National Board examination and the practical examination given by the State Board. (This license must renewed every two years; 25 hours every two years of continuing education is required).

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Extensive knowledge of general dental techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients.
  • Must have knowledge of alphabetical filling system.
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of verbal and English comprehension and expression to communicate clearly with callers, visitors and staff.

 

Must meet physical requirements as stated on job description addendum

 

Responsibilities

  • Under the general supervision of the licensed dentist, removes lime deposits, accretions and stains from unattached surface of teeth. Applies topical agents essential to complete prophylaxis. Performs root planning. Polishes and contour restorations. Oral exfoliative cytology. Applies pit and fissure sealants.

  • Performs preliminary examinations, including but not limited to periodontal charting, intra and extra-oral examination of soft tissue, exfoliative cytology, charting of lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth, classifying occlusion, myofuntional evaluation.
  • Registered Dental Hygienist may perform the procedures set forth below ONLY under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist when done so pursuant to the order, control and full professional responsibility of the supervising dentist. Such procedures shall be checked and approved by the supervising dentist prior to dismissal of the patient from the office of said dentist.
  • All duties so assigned to a registered dental Hygienist, as listed in CA Dental Practice Act.
  • Periodontal soft tissue curettage. (Evidence of satisfactory completion of a board-approved course of instruction in this function must be submitted to the board prior to any performance thereof.)

Child Care:

  • PDH is thrilled to provide our Child Care Center services to all families in our area. Our program is operational from 7:45am to 5:15pm, Monday through Friday, and is approved for children aged 0 to 5 years.
