The Unit Secretary will be responsible for providing a wide range of clerical support for the hospital nurses station as well as serving as the monitor technician for cardiac monitors, and temperature monitors. The Unit Secretary has the ability to maintain order and flow during peak patient surges, respond to multiple demands with integrity and persistence, prioritize duties according to their critical nature and achieve desired outcomes for our patient population. The Unit Secretary performs tasks such as answering phones, filing, scanning, facilitating patient transfers to acute and long term facilities, and helping hospital ancillary staff, nurses and doctors. They serve as a cardiac monitoring technician and monitors other central monitoring, relaying important changes to the ancillary department staff. The Unit Secretary contributes to the provision of quality care through participating in performance improvement activities that provide positive outcomes.
As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN), Medical Assistant (MA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and under the supervision of the Nurse, the health care professional may give patient care as designated under that scope of practice. They may perform selected procedures as defined in their respective scope of practice. Under supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Unit Secretary provides a support function to the nurse by coordinating special tasks and assisting where needed. The Unit Secretary must demonstrate technical competence, excellent communication skills and sensitivity for the hospitalized patient and family.
Education: High School diploma or GED. Current CPR Certification. Certification as a hospital unit secretary or medical secretary required if no experience in health care. CNA, MA or EMT certification preferred.
Experience: One year in an acute or long term care facility or 2 years in an outpatient care setting if no certification as a hospital unit secretary or medical secretary.
